Teen Driver Charged in New Jersey Crash That Killed Passenger

The 17-year-old driver whose SUV crashed and flipped over multiple times into a yard in New Jersey, killing a passenger, has been charged in the deadly crash, prosecutors announced Friday.

The driver, who prosecutors are not naming because the driver is being charged as a juvenile, was going at a "reckless" high rate of speed on Hasbrouck Avenue in Emerson late Wednesday night when the driver lost control at Chestnut Street, Bergen County prosecutors say.

The 2008 Nissan Pathfinder flipped several times, leaving the street and coming to a rest on the driver's side in someone's yard, prosecutors said. As the vehicle was flipping, front seat passenger Stephanie Morgan, 18, was ejected from the vehicle.

Morgan was pronounced dead at Hackensack University Medical Center.

The driver and a 15-year-old back seat passenger were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries, prosecutors said.

The driver is being charged with a complaint of juvenile delinquency that, if committed by an adult, would constitute second-degree vehicular homicide, prosecutors said.

The driver also faces various traffic violations.

Morgan, of Emerson, was just about to graduate from Emerson Junior Senior High School.
