Swimming Fisherman Who Went Missing in Hudson Presumed Drowned: Officials

The angler was with two friends at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson when he jumped into the water, according to police. But after he jumped in, he didn't resurface

A fisherman who disappeared after going swimming in the Hudson River is presumed to have drowned, officials said.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino said that 47-year-old Alex Desouza of Brooklyn is presumed dead after disappearing in the water off of Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson on Tuesday morning. His body hasn't been recovered.

"We're presuming that he has drowned," Astorino said.

Astorino said that the man was with two other friends from Brooklyn and were going to stay in a cabin but weren't able to check in yet. So they went to an unguarded part of the park known as Teller's Point to fish at about 10 a.m.

At some point, they decided to go in the water, which Astorino said was fairly shallow. But a strong current swept up the 47-year-old.

The man's companions called 911 after the man disappeared, and crews spent several hours searching fruitlessly for the man.

The water in that area is anywhere from 4 to 10 feet deep in the area, depending on the tide. Authorities said there is also a sandbar that could have caught the man by surprise.
