Street Briefly Closed After Suspicious Package Report Near Penn Station

A street was briefly closed near Penn Station after authorities responded to a report of a suspicious package outside the commuter hub during the height of Wednesday's morning rush, officials and witnesses said.

The FDNY said it received a call about the potentially suspicious package shortly before 8 a.m. A small area was blocked off between Seventh and Eighth avenues near 33rd Street for a time and traffic was diverted, but the street had been reopened after authorities gave the "all clear" around 8:45 a.m.

Chopper 4 was over the scene as police investigated the bag, which turned out to be a piece of black luggage left outside a store. Sneakers and other miscellaneous items were inside it.

Subways and NJ Transit trains were not affected.
