Suspect Robbed $1 From Man While Brandishing Steak Knife: Report

Officials say a Jersey City man may face up to 20 years in prison after robbing a man at knifepoint for $1.

NJ.com reports 32-year-old Michael Gerst is charged with first degree armed robbery, resisting arrest and an additional weapons charge for the Aug 3. incident.

Police say Gerst brandished a red-handled steak knife to a man on Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City and demanded $1.

Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor John Wojtal says police recovered the knife from Gerst.

Officials say Gerst has six prior arrests, two disorderly persons convictions and an attempted arson conviction.

Gerst's public defender argued his client should be charged with aggravated assault, and not armed robbery, which carries a possible sentence of 10 to 20 years.
