Lawrence Elliot, 47, is escorted by police after his arrest.

Cops have arrested a suspect in the brutal sexual assault of a City College student in her Hamilton Heights apartment.

Lawrence Elliot, 47, of Harlem was picked up by cops yesterday and charged early Sunday.  According to the Daily News, he is a convicted rapist.  Elliot has been charged with rape and robbery, officials said.

Elliot is accused of following his 21--year-old victim home, raping and robbing her in the middle of the day Thursday. Her attacker forced himself into her Hamilton Heights apartment, police said.

Sources tell NBCNewYork Saturday morning that they are continuing to question an individual who was turned into Crimestoppers by a number of people after police released surveillance video showing the suspect allegedly using the woman's ATM card at a nearby deli.

The man was also captured on security cameras outside and inside the building where the woman was attacked.

Sources all said they feel like the suspect in custody is likely connected to the attack, but warn the arrest might not be immediate.
