NYC Education Department Investigating Non-Sports Injury During High School Football Camp

The New York City Department of Education says it is investigating a high school football program after a parent told the Staten Island Advance her son came home from the team's five-day training camp with an injury unrelated to football.

The Advance reports that a parent said her son was injured after attending the camp at Susan Wagner High School on Staten Island. She didn't elaborate on the extent of her son's injuries, and stopped short of calling the incident hazing.

When asked by a reporter, the Advance says, she said she had heard that at least one member of the junior varsity team had been hit with a broomstick.

In a statement to NBC 4 New York on Monday, the city Education Department said it is looking into the report.

"We have zero tolerance for the type of behavior alleged. This matter is being taken seriously and is under investigation," the department said in a statement.

Several officials declined to comment to the Advance, but sources told the paper that something did happen at the camp.
