Fake Cop Stops Alleged Subway Fare Evader, Steals Cellphone: NYPD

A subway thief posing as a police officer stopped a boy who allegedly crawled through a turnstile without paying, then ran off with his cellphone, police say.

The 13-year-old boy was stopped by the suspect at the 168th Street and Fort Washington Avenue subway stop in Washington Heights on Tuesday, Oct. 14, police said.

Pretending to be an officer, the suspect asked the boy for his phone, told him he needed to borrow it to take some photos and that he would be right back, according to police.

The fake cop ran off and never returned with the phone, police said.
