Woman Charged With Assault in 6 Train Stabbing at 59th Street and Lexington

Police said the attack Monday morning appeared to be random

A 31-year-old homeless woman has been charged with assault after allegedly randomly attacking a woman on a northbound 6 train Monday, stabbing her several times.

Ashley Jacob is undergoing psychiatric care at Bellevue Hospital, officials said.

Police say she stabbed Heather Burke, 39, as the train pulled into the station at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue Monday at about 10 a.m.

The victim, Heather Burke, wrote on her Facebook page, "She stabbed with no provocation whatsoever. I'm lucky to be alive."

Police say the suspect also punched a second woman who tried to help Burke.

Witnesses told police the suspect lunged at Burke with a knife for no apparent reason.

Passengers tried to restrain the suspect but she broke free and lunged at Burke again, stabbing her in the stomach and shoulder as Burke tried to get off the train, witnesses told police.

Burke wrote on Facebook, "I certainly don't know if I will ever be OK with riding the subway again."
