Robbers Slash Straphanger, Steal Bag of Tupperware: NYPD

Two men slashed a subway rider as they robbed him of his Tupperware-filled bookbag early Tuesday, police say.

The 26-year-old man was riding the southbound 2 train in the Bronx's Mott Haven neighborhood at about 1:15 a.m. when the two robbers approached him, police say.

The suspects tried to take the man's bookbag, but the man fought back. That's when police said the robbers slashed the victim in the back of the head, forehead and left hand.

The victim got off at the Jackson Avenue station, and the suspects stayed on.

The victim was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he was treated and released for his injuries.

Slashings and stabbings were up by 25 percent through early April this year compared to the same time last year, according to the NYPD. Police have said less than 2 percent of the crimes were committed on the subway, but the high-profile nature of the incidents -- including one involving a sleeping tourist last Friday -- has put New Yorkers on edge.

Police officials have launched an initiative focusing on reducing those crimes.

Anyone who recognizes the suspects in the surveillance video should call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
