Gridlock Alert: Street Closures, Traffic Changes for United Nations General Assembly

Here's a list of the street closures for the week

Trying to get around Manhattan will be a major headache for drivers this week as world leaders and diplomats converge on First Avenue for the annual General Assembly of the United Nations.

President Barack Obama will be among the dignitaries addressing the Assembly and the city has made traffic changes to accommodate his arrival and the other delegations.

Here is a list of daily street closures and traffic changes through Friday:

Tuesday, Sept. 25

These streets are closed to vehicular traffic:

First Avenue from 42nd Street to 48th Street. The tunnel underpass from 41st Street to 48 Street will remain open passenger cars. Trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access.

  • 44th Street from First Avenue to Second Avenue
  • 45th Street from First Avenue to Second Avenue
  • 46th Street from First Avenue to Second Avenue
  • 49th Street from Third Avenue to Lexington Avenue

These streets will have one traffic lane dedicated to emergency vehicles for the duration of the General Assembly:

  • 42nd Street from First Avenue to Fifth Avenue
  • 57th Street from Second Avenue to Fifth Avenue
  • Second Avenue from 41st Street to 57th Street

These streets close to vehicular traffic starting at about 5 a.m.:

  • 42nd Street from the FDR Drive to Second Avenue
  • The 42nd Street exit and entrance ramps of the FDR Drive

*Note: These areas will reopen each evening after the day's session

On Tuesday the FDR DRIVE will subject to intermittent closures:

  • Southbound at 63rd Street
  • Northbound at South Ferry

Additional intermittent closures to vehicular traffic for Tuesday include:

  • 50th Street from Park Avenue to First Avenue
  • First Avenue from 42nd Street to 50th Street

Wednesday, Sept. 26

These streets are closed to vehicular traffic:

First Avenue from 42nd Street to 48th Street. The tunnel underpass from 41st Street to 48 Street will remain open passenger cars. Trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access.

  • 45th Street from First Avenue to Second Avenue
  • 46th Street from First Avenue to Second Avenue
  • 49th Street from Third Avenue to Lexington Avenue
