Evening Commute Snow Moves Through Tri-State

What to Know

  • Some light snow is expected Friday afternoon; the Jersey shore and Long Island could see 1 to 2+ inches while NYC is expecting up to 1 inch
  • The bitter cold will push out this weekend, but temperatures will still struggle to reach the low 40s, forecasters say
  • The start of next week will begin in the mid-to-upper 40s ahead of the first official day of winter on Thursday

The tri-state got one more round of snow before this bitter cold moves out, and this one made for an ugly Friday evening commute.

Storm Team 4 says 1 to 2 inches of snow fell on a wide swath of the tri-state by late Friday. The city only saw about an inch, but locally higher amounts of 2 inches or more fell along the Jersey Shore and parts of coastal Long Island.

Snow began falling in parts of the region by early afternoon and the white stuff was expected to last through the night, making for slick roads and reduced visibility at times, according to Storm Team 4.

The sky is expected to clear Friday night, but temperatures will remain chilly with lows in the teens in many suburbs, Storm Team 4 says. Wind chills will be biting -- in the 10s and 0s -- overnight into early Saturday morning.

The weekend forecast is still be chilly, but the region should move out of the numbing deep freeze. Temps Saturday are expected to cap out in the high 30s before moving up to 40 on Sunday and growing steadily warmer next week.
