Stepfather Accused of Shaking Girl, 2, Now Charged With Murder: Police

The stepdad of a Brooklyn 2-year-old that died after allegedly being shaken was rearrested on upgraded charges Wednesday.

Police say 25-year-old David Adams is now charged with murder after the medical examiner’s officer deemed 2-year-old Thaiya Spruill’s death a homicide.

Officers responded to Spruill’s home on Dumont Avenue in Brownsville on Nov. 13 of last year after her family reported she was having difficulty breathing. They found her semiconscious with bruises and head trauma.

She was taken to the hospital in critical condition and placed on life support, while her mother and stepfather were questioned, police said. She was taken off life support the following day.

Adams was initially arrested and charged with felony assault, reckless assault of a child, and endangering the welfare of a child after it was determined that he had violently shaken the child, police said.

The family has a history with the city's Adminstration for Children's Services, sources said.
