Staten Island Ferry Service to Be Expanded: Report

The Staten Island Ferry is on its way to running every half hour, according to a report.

Mayor De Blasio announced Wednesday that the service would add 12 ferry trips to the weekly schedule and would eventually operate every 30 minutes throughout the week, reports the New York Times.

Right now, the Staten Island Ferry runs once every half hour except during early mornings on weekdays, when it runs once an hour between 1:30 and 5 a.m., and early mornings on weekends, when it runs once per hour for a longer period.

The announcement is the latest in the De Blasio’s plan to expand ferry service citywide. In February, the mayor proposed a new five-borough ferry plan that would launch in 2017 and, along with the existing East River Ferry service, link neighborhoods like Coney Island, Astoria, Queens, the South Bronx and Staten Island.
