The U.S. Army says two New Jersey men were killed in Afghanistan last week in separate incidents.

Staff Sgt. Raul M. Guerra of Union City, N.J. died in Spin Boldak on July 4 while assigned to the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Army officials said. It was his third deployment to Afghanistan and his fifth Army deployment.

He had previously served in Iraq, officials said.

Guerra entered the Army in March 1999, and his awards and decorations include the Joint Service Commendation, the Army Commendation, the Army Good Conduct and National Defense Service medals.

On July 8, Spc. Jonathan Batista, 22, of Kinnelon, died in Zharay in the Kandahar Province when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, N.C.
