Police are still investigating how a seemingly peaceful relationship between two families turned fatal after a 52-year-old woman who worked for the Department of Education was stabbed to death in a Brooklyn apartment early Wednesday morning.
Police say 42-year-old Michael Dunne had been arguing with Annemarie Vardy, their fight spilling into the lobby of the building on Bay Ridge Avenue in Dyker Heights shortly after 7 a.m.
Police say Vardy rented a room from Dunne's mother, and Dunne recently moved out. The stabbing happened with Dunne's mother and daughter in the apartment, police said.
Vardy was stabbed in the stomach, and the suspect surrendered to police, dropping the knife as they arrived to the chaotic morning scene.
Children watched as the medical examiner processed the crime scene, removing bloody napkins and a bag full of medication.
The Department of Education said in a statement, "We have lost a valued member of our community in this tragedy, and we mourn with her family."
Police initially said three people had been stabbed at the building on Bay Ridge Avenue in Dyker Heights, but later said it was just the one woman.
