Sophia and Ethan Most Popular NYC Baby Names in 2014

For the third straight year, more newborn girls in New York City were called Sophia than any other name.

There were 586 Sophias born in 2014, Health Department officials said this week. Sofia, with an "F," ranked number nine on the list.

Officials say Ethan was the most popular name for boys, with 740 of them born last year. The name had formerly ranked second in popularity in 2013 and 2012.

New York City parents were inspired by everything from geographic locations (Charlotte) and celebrity names (Liam) to television shows like Game of Thrones (Arya was #98 on the girls' list and Khaleesi was #143). Movie characters' names were also a source of inspiration (Leia and Luke).

The most babies — 41,190 — were born to mothers who resided in Brooklyn. The second most babies — 26,937 — were born to moms who lived in Queens. The Bronx came in third with 20,032 babies and Manhattan was fourth with 18,143 babies. About 5,255 babies were born on Staten Island.

The top 10 most popular girl names were: Sophia, Isabella, Olivia, Mia, Emma, Emily, Leah, Ava, Sofia and Chloe.

The top 10 most popular boy names were: Ethan, Jacob, Liam, Jayden, Noah, Daniel, Michael, Alexander, David and Matthew.
