Cape May Plans to Ban Smoking on Beach

Cape May is moving forward with plans to ban smoking on its beaches and the oceanfront Promenade.

The city council, which is composed of nonsmokers, plans to introduce the ordinance on Oct. 18. It would be enforced year-round.

Councilman William Murray told The Press of Atlantic City officials will monitor beach tag sales and conflicts between smokers and nonsmokers to see how the ban works.

The councilman says the ban would mostly be enforced by non-smokers.

Several towns in Monmouth and Ocean counties have restricted smoking along beaches.
