Smoke Condition Forces Staten Island School Evacuation

A Staten Island elementary school was briefly evacuated Wednesday afternoon because of a smoke condition, officials said.

The FDNY said it evacuated P.S. 4 on Nedra Lane, which serves about 700 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The Department of Education said a power surge caused the fuse box to smoke inside the boiler room. Half of the school also lost power.

The air was deemed safe and students and staff were allowed back into the school.
