Sister Says Gunman Slain by NYPD Was Mentally Ill

The dead man's sister, Natalie Jourdan, said her brother Peter Jourdan suffered from paranoid schizophrenia

The sister of a man killed by an NYPD officer after he opened fire on the subway says her brother was mentally ill and should have been hospitalized.

The Daily News reports that the dead man's sister, Natalie Jourdan, said her brother Peter Jourdan suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

Two plainclothes police officers were wounded when Peter Jourdan fired at them on a subway train in Brooklyn on Thursday.

One of the officers returned fire and killed the 37-year-old Jourdan, of Allentown, Pa.

Jourdan's sister said her brother should not have been allowed to buy a handgun.

Natalie Jourdan and other family members gathered in Brooklyn on Saturday. They said Jourdan made at least a dozen trips to jails and hospitals but was routinely sent back to the streets.
