Man Posts Video of Bumpy NYC Road After 311 Complaints Go Unanswered

A man upset about the conditions of a New York City road took matters into his own hands after his calls to the city's 311 line went unanswered, posting video of his treacherous commute to Facebook.

Tommy Breen posted video of the conditions on  Shore Road, which connects the borough with Westchester County and runs through Pelham Bay Park, to the social network last weeks, hoping a groundswell of support could convince city transportation workers to fix what he calls "a famously dangerous situation."

"There's nothing warning you about the danger up ahead," Breen said. "The local people know about it, but this is a very busy road."

The video, which has garnered nearly 14,000 views, shows drivers slowing down to drive through potholes on the dilapidated roadway, or crossing over into oncoming traffic to avoid driving through snow. Some drivers come to a stop as they wait for others to pass by.

At one point in the footage, most of which is shot by drone, the words "NYC Fix This" flashes over top of the footage.

"The worst-case scenario is a head-on accident," Breen says. "There's no reason to wait for tragedy to fix it."

Breen, a City Island native, said he's called New York City's 311 line dozens of times over the last five years to no avail and is hoping the video will end in changes on the roadway.

A city representative said that there have been three complaints about the roadway so far this year. They say that underground water seepage is to blame for the condition of the roadway.

"The Department of Transportation will continue road maintenance to make sure potholes are filled, and agencies will collaborate on a more long-term solution to the problem," the representative said.
