4 Arrested, More Than a Dozen Cited Following Raucous Rutgers Street Party

Authorities say four people were arrested and another 16 were issued summonses or other violations when police in riot gear broke up a rowdy street party near the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick over the weekend.

Police were called late Saturday afternoon after partygoers began breaking bottles and burning couches and mattresses in the area of Delafield street.

No serious injuries were reported, but many people said they were pepper-sprayed as police worked to disperse the nearly 500 revelers. New Brunswick spokesman Russell Marchetta told the Home News Tribune officers began using pepper spray once bottles and other objects were thrown at them.

Authorities say the people arrested face various charges, including obstruction, aggravated police assault, rioting and disorderly conduct. Citations were issued for disorderly-related offenses.

Most of the partygoers appeared to be Rutgers students. Police say they are reviewing security footage captured that night and that the investigation is ongoing.

The street party, dubbed "Delafest," was an outgrowth of Rutgersfest, which used to be an annual concert to mark the end of the school year.

Rutgersfest was canceled several years ago after university officials decided it had become too dangerous.
