Selfie Offers Clue to Mobile Phone Theft: Cops

A man provided police with a helpful lead in the reported theft of a mobile phone: a selfie taken with the stolen device.

Police released the photograph of the alleged suspect and are asking for the public's help in identifying him.

The victim, a 36-year-old man, was texting on his phone while riding a southbound Q train at about 5:45 a.m. on Oct. 24, when the phone was snatched from his hand as the train entered the Beverley Road station in Brooklyn.

The suspect fled the train when the doors opened.

The suspect eventually used the phone to take a photo of himself, which turned up on the victim's Google account, police said. Some phone users set up their devices to back up photos automatically to their Google photo libraries.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
