FEMA to Give $100M for Sandy-Damaged NYCHA Boilers

In the 16 months since Sandy hit the East Coast, New York City has spent $3 million each month for temporary boilers

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Sen. Charles Schumer say the federal government will pay for new boilers in more than 100 city public housing buildings damaged in Hurricane Sandy.

De Blasio and Schumer held a news conference Sunday to announce the $100 million funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In the 16 months since Sandy hit the East Coast, New York City has spent $3 million each month for temporary boilers.

They serve residential buildings on Manhattan's Lower East Side, Brooklyn's Coney Island and the Rockaway section of Queens.

Schumer says bureaucratic infighting and red tape has often left public housing residents in the cold and in darkness because of failing makeshift equipment.

Boiler replacement will start later this year.
