NYC School Lunches May Go on Diet

Peanut butter and jelly or the Sloppy Joe?

Under a proposal by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, NYC schools are cutting their lunch options.

Schools that offer three hot lunch options would only offer two, and schools that already offer two, may offer just one,

If the proposal, which would save $23.7 million a year, passes, changes would be made this coming Fall.

The Department of Education says students will not notice any major change since schools serve cold sandwiches in addition to the hot lunch choices.

But City Council member Gale Brewer says school lunch may be the only hot meal of the day for many students and the cut would make them less likely to eat it.
