City Releases Second School Closing List

Union president said Department of Education should instead do the "hard work of helping struggling schools.''

New York City has released its second list of struggling schools it is proposing to close, after announcing the first 12 on Thursday.

The Department of Education says three additional schools will lose the middle school grades and will become either just high schools or just elementary schools.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said the decision to close a school is never easy. But he said the city has a responsibility to provide students with better options.

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew criticized the planned school closings and said the department should instead do the "hard work of helping struggling schools.''

The union has twice filed lawsuits to block school closings.
