Police are investigating an apparent hit-and-run in the Bronx involving a school bus they say hit and killed a 68-year-old woman Thursday morning.

The incident took place around 9:50 a.m. at the intersection Havemeyer and Story avenues in the Castle Hill section as the woman was crossing Story avenue, NYPD says.

The incident is being investigated as a hit-and-run and the school bus driver has yet to be identified. NBC 4 New York reached out to the bus company. A woman who answered the phone, hung up.

Images from the scene early in the morning following the incident showed clothes thrown about the street as officers were combing the area to piece together what exactly took place.

The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition but ened up passing away.

Surveillance video captured the incident including the moment of impact.

Residents in the area said they were shocked by what happened.

"We are just stunned," resident Angela Laguer said. " We didn't know her personally, but she's our neighbor. It could have been any of us."

According to another resident, the street has seen an uptick in larger vehicles.

"This street here used to be a nice quiet residential block and now all we got is buses, trucks and buses," Gozalo Velez said.

Just blocks away from the scene of the hit-and-run, NBC 4 New York found signs banning buses from dirving through the residential area.
