School Bus Driver Arrested After Sleeping Child Left Alone on Bus: Police

A New York school bus driver was arrested after he left a sleeping 9-year-old child alone on a school bus after his morning run, state police say.

The 50-year-old driver from West Nyack in Rockland County was arrested on misdemeanor charges of child endangerment and falsifying business records in the Feb. 10 incident.

Police said the child, a student at the Hempstead Elementary School in the East Ramapo Central School District, fell asleep on the bus and was left alone for about 40 minutes.

The driver never conducted the required sweep of the bus after his morning bus run, but indicated in his daily report paperwork that he did, according to police.

It's not clear how the child was found, but police made the arrest after being contacted by the state's Department of Social Services Child Abuse Hotline.

State Police in Haverstraw processed the driver and issued him an appearance ticket to return to Town of Ramapo Court on March 3.
