9 Students Injured After School Bus Overturns in New York

Authorities say 11 people, including nine students, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a school bus crashed and overturned on a Hudson Valley road.

The bus was heading to three area Catholic schools when a car collided into it in the hamlet of Arlington in Poughkeepsie, fire officials say.

According to police, a minivan was stopped in an eastbound direction on Spackenkill Road, waiting to make a left turn onto Cedar Valley Road. A 21-year-old woman in another vehicle came up behind the minivan, colliding with it, then continued to go over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and collided with the school bus.

The impact sent the bus hurtling over onto its side.

The driver of the car had to be extricated from the vehicle and was the most seriously injured, fire officials say. The driver and children on the bus were able to escape the vehicle using a hatch on the roof.

They were all taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, and parents of the students on the bus were notified, according to officials. The students were in good condition.

The woman driving the minivan and the four passengers in it were not hurt, police said.

"This could have been much worse," said Arlington Fire Captain Bill Steenbergh. "Buses are built incredibly strong to begin with. They do that for a reason obviously, but this was certainly a near-miss."
