4 Workers Hurt During Demolition of Building Near Grand Central: Officials

Four construction workers were hurt during an interior demolition project at a midtown commercial building not far from Grand Central Terminal Tuesday, officials say.

The victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital after the 10 a.m. accident at East 43rd Street and Madison Avenue, about a block west of the transit hub. All were expected to survive, officials said.

SL Green Realty Corp., which manages the property, said in a statement the workers fell while taking down a large light fixture. A licensed site safety manager was present at the time of the accident.

Three of the four injured workers were expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday; the other remains at Bellevue in stable condition, the company said.

"Safety is our top priority; we're continuing to monitor the workers’ status and we will release information as soon as it's available," SL Green Realty Corp. said.

Extensive traffic delays were reported in the area due to the emergency response. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
