SUV Crashes Into Long Island Home; Driver Arrested

An engaged couple who fell asleep watching a movie were awakened Saturday by an SUV slammed into their home, police said.

Melissa Latino and Eddie Rorrison said they were asleep in their den on Parkside Avenue in Miller Place at about 2:30 a.m. when the vehicle crashed through a wall and into their dining room, just a few feet away. When the driver tried to back out, they told him to get out of the car.

When the driver emerged from the car, he asked for a cigarette, Melissa Rorrison said. Neighbors then helped subdue him until the police arrived, the couple said.

Police arrested Gerard Tegins, the 20-year-old driver, on a charge of driving while intoxicated. Authorities say he didn't stop at a stop sign and lost control, veering across multiple lawns before crashing into the house. He was treated for minor injuries. It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

There was extensive damage to the house, and the couple said they had been told it was unsafe for them to stay there.
