3 Arrested in Deadly NJ Playground Shooting

Damel Mitchell, 17, was killed Monday morning at Sylvester Land Memorial Field, near Polk Elementary School

Three teenagers have been arrested in the shooting death of a 17-year-old New Jersey boy across the street from an elementary school, police said.

Nyfee Mallory, 18, and two 17-year-old suspects, all from Roselle, are charged with the deadly shooting of Damel Mitchell, who was killed Monday morning at Sylvester Land Memorial Field, near Polk Elementary School.

People who heard the gunfire said they initially thought it may have been students playing with fireworks on their day off from school this Presidents Day.

Roselle Mayor Jamel Holley called the incident "startling."

“I ask my fellow residents to be vigilant, report suspicious behavior, and to stand with police against any criminal that seeks to disrupt our peaceful way of life,” Holley said shortly after the shooting.

Mallory's bail was set at $1 million. He's being held at the Union County Jail. The two juveniles are being held at the county juvenile detention center.

Information on their attorneys wasn't immediately available.
