A free subway shuttle service has started operating on the Rockaway Peninsula to assist straphangers who normally use the A train, where tracks from Howard Beach to the Rockways were almost completely destroyed by Sandy.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says that while work continues on the damaged tracks, the new H train shuttle service will help improve travel for residents of the Rockaways.

The shuttle will run every 15 minutes between the Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue station and the Beach 90-Holland station.

Passengers can take the H to Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue and then transfer to the free shuttle bus to the Howard Beach station on the A train.

The H will run daily from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m. It began operating on Tuesday.
