The Whitestone Bridge has re-opened after being completely shut down for about six hours on Friday after a construction truck crashed into an overhead road sign -- sending it crashing across the width of the roadway.
Two contractors suffered minor injuries.
A truck driven by an MTA Bridges and Tunnels contractor was behind the accident. Shortly after 1p.m., the truck failed to clear the sign on the southbound plaza of the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge near the Queens anchorage, the MTA said.
The impact of the accident took down the sign and the gantry -- the metal system that supports signs -- blocking all five lanes.
All lanes of the bridge re-opened around 7:20 p.m.
Traffic was diverted to the Throgs Neck and Robert F. Kennedy bridges.
