15 Rikers Island Inmates Charged in Brutal Thanksgiving Beating of Officer

More than a dozen Rikers Island inmates have been indicted in connection with a coordinated beating of a correction captain on Thanksgiving Day, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Security video shows the city Department of Correction captain being approached and then beaten by 33-year-old Jason Reid, prosecutors say.

Prior to the assault, Reid allegedly held a meeting where he enlisted the help of other inmates in what prosecutors describe as a “coordinated attack.”

Reid’s co-defendants allegedly blocked officers from helping the captain, who suffered multiple injuries, including a laceration to his neck and abrasions.

Prosecutors say the inmates were retaliating for an earlier incident in which the captain used pepper spray to diffuse an altercation involving Reid, a member of the Bloods gang, and other inmates.

Reid and the others face a slew of charges, including robbery, attempted gang assault and rioting. It wasn’t immediately known if they have attorneys.
