Ex-Inmate, Beaten in 2012 by NYC Jail Guards, Fatally Shot

A former New York City inmate who was hogtied and badly beaten by Rikers Island jail guards in 2012 has been fatally shot in Brooklyn.

Police say Friday Robert Hinton was shot in the head and stomach outside a public housing complex Thanksgiving night.

In September, city attorneys settled the 28-year-old's civil rights lawsuit for $450,000.

Lawyer Nicole Bellina said Hinton had hoped to use the settlement to "give himself and his family a fresh start and better life."

Five correction officers and a captain were fired earlier this year for the beating inside a now-closed solitary confinement unit for inmates with mental illnesses. Hinton suffered a broken nose, fractured back and other injuries.

Police say no arrests have been made. The Daily News first reported Hinton's death.
