Ride the Rails to the Game

Metro-North will offer round trip service from Connecticut to the Meadowlands

Metro-North is hoping to score a touchdown with its newest service.  Football fans can now hop on a train in New Haven and end up at the Meadowlands.  Giants and Jets fans, if you’re heading to New Jersey for the 1 p.m. Sunday kick off you can ride the rails.

Here’s what you need to know: You’ll buy a round trip ticket to the Meadowlands at any Metro-North ticket office, kiosk or the web.

The direct service will make stops in New Haven, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Westport, South Norwalk, Stamford, Greenwich, Rye, NY and Larchmont, NY. The first of the three game day trains leave New Haven at 8:05 a.m.

It will take you about 2 hours and 40 minutes to get from New Haven to the Meadowlands and just 1 hour and 45 minutes from Stamford. That sure beats a trip down the Jersey Turnpike where you never know how long it will take to get over the bridge.

You’ll take the Metro-North train to Secaucus Junction then look for the “MTA Tickets” signs and board the Meadowlands Rail Line. It will take you about 10 minutes to get to the stadium. After your favorite team wins, just ride the Meadowlands Rail Line back to Secaucus Junction for your direct service home.

Your round trip ticket will only cost $7.75 more than a regular fare to Grand Central Terminal.

“This test of regional integration took several years of planning but only minor investment in infrastructure," said Metro-North's president, Howard Permut. "We think this tri-state train service will be great for football fans - no traffic, no parking lot jam-ups and a safe, easy ride will make getting to and from the games a breeze. I hope it catches on,” he continued.

Service starts on September 20 when the New England Patriots travel to New Jersey to play the Jets.
