The former deputy police chief of an Upstate New York community shot and killed his ex-girlfriend Saturday and before turning the gun on himself, state police investigators say.
State Troopers and local police responded to a report of multiple gunshots in the Town of Goshen at about 8:30 a.m. They found the body of Marie Giannone, 55, in the driver seat of her vehicle with several gunshot wounds, officials said.
Troopers further searched the area and found Patrick Sorrentino, 55, of Marlboro, dead from a single gunshot wound. Sorrentino retired as deputy chief of the Newburgh Police Department in 2007 after spending five years on leave related to an injury.
Sorrentino and Giannone dated for about 18 months and broke up in August, investigators said. Sorrentino subsequently became withdrawn and angry, they said.
"It saddens us that Patrick Sorrentino took the life of an innocent person prior to taking his own," said Newburgh Police Chief Daniel Cameron. "Our hearts go out to everyone that is grieving from this senseless act."
