Commuters board a bus near First Avenue in New York City.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to raise fares on express buses and special van services, according to a published report.

The MTA budget proposal will raise express bus fares by 50 percent and double the fare disabled riders pay for special van service, according to the Daily News.

Express bus riders could pay $7.50 per trip, up from $5, according to the report.

Faced with its worst financial problems in more than two decades, the MTA is seeking a 23 percent increase in fares and toll revenues next year to make up for the growing budget gap. The increases are intended to raise about $600 million in 2009 to put a dent in the $1.2 billion expected deficit.

Base subway and bus fares would increase to at least $2.50, from $2, and the cost of unlimited-ride monthly MetroCards could rise to $100, according to the New York Times.

  • Cliff Thursday, Nov 20 at 12:29 AM FLAG COMMENT The key word is "Accountability," and as it seems now there is none. The state or the city needs to step in and perform a thorough audit on the entire MTA financial books, from top to bottom. Then a new plan needs to be drawn up on what, or who, actually needs to be cut. As it stand now there is a lot of higher ups who are making sizeable salaries and bonus and letting the average middle class worker absorb the brunt of the ... MORE >
  • Janet Wednesday, Nov 19 at 5:23 PM FLAG COMMENT Will not be able to afford this rate hike. Might actually be cheaper to drive. With everything going on with the economy, if this hike occurs I will have to make serious decisions as to whrther I can continue to pay my credit cards or go to work. I also pay for my college child. This would add more than 100.00 to my already 175.00.Staten Islanders especially have no alternatives .The express bus is the fastest commute and that ... MORE >
  • Chris Wednesday, Nov 19 at 5:07 PM FLAG COMMENT Do you people think your $5 express bus far can cover the cost of the $500,000 buses you ride in. Those express buses carry about 200 pass max each day and that can no way make a profit.
  • Anonymous Wednesday, Nov 19 at 2:21 PM FLAG COMMENT I lived in SI and took the express bus for many years. It just kept on geeting harder & harder getting into work. Over the years the fare went up coupled w/ the work they were doing on the V Bridge and the congestion just to get off the island forced me to move. Sell your house, move to NJ and take the train!
  • AAC Wednesday, Nov 19 at 2:18 PM FLAG COMMENT How can the MTA justify this latest scam. Ridership has never been so high, we get crushed daily and yet they are still loosing money. Who is auditing these people? Who is getting paid off? What type of salaries and bonuses are these usual people making at the top of this scheming system. Someone is obviously making money, while we are getting bled dry and crushed to death.
