Suspect in Rape of Sleeping Woman in Brooklyn Turns Himself In: NYPD

Police say they've arrested the suspected rapist who broke into a woman's unlocked apartment in Brooklyn Saturday morning and attacked her after he startled her awake in bed.

Jason Lasry, 38, turned himself in to police Thursday, arriving at the station with his lawyer, police said. He was charged with rape and is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Lasry, who lives in Brooklyn, has been arrested 13 times in the past, though none were rape-related, police say.

The 24-year-old victim was sleeping when the suspect entered her apartment on Halsey Street in Bushwick at about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, then allegedly attacked and raped her, police said.

She eventually pushed the man off of her and he then ran away, NYPD officials said.

Police say this man is a person of interest in the attack.

The woman called police, and she was taken to a local hospital. Relatives told News 4 that she doesn't feel safe in her own home anymore and has been staying with relatives.

Neighbors, meanwhile, said their senses of safety were likewise shattered. One resident told News 4 that everyone he knew couldn't believe that an attack like that took place on their block.

"It's really concerning," said Sofia Amaril, another Bushwick resident. "I wouldn't -- I didn't -- expect it in this neighborhood."

Attorney information for Lasry wasn't immediately available.
