Randi Weingarten will step down as president of the United Federation of Teachers, according to reports.
She's expected to announce her resignation next week, The Daily News reported.
Michael Mulgrew, the current COO of the UFT, will take her place, according to sources cited by the paper.
"They are very big shoes to fill," a union source told the Daily News. "Of course his style is going to be different, but I think generally people are confident in Michael."
Weingarten has been president of the UFT since 1998, according to her bio on uft.org. She represents more than 160,000 non-supervisory educators in the city's public school system. And she became president of the UFT's national union, the American Federation of Teachers, just last year.
"It's hard to maintain a foot in both jobs," a source told the Daily News.
Added another source: "I'm unhappy that she's leaving. I realize it's very difficult to run both unions."
