Teen Cyclist Dies Week After Being Struck by Car Near Queensboro Bridge: NYPD

A Queens teenager died a week after he was struck by a driver near the Queensboro Bridge while riding a bicycle, police said.

Kevin Lopez, 18, of Long Island City, died at Cornell Hospital Wednesday, eight days after he was hit by a Mercedes Benz at Queens Plaza North and 29th Street.

Lopez was riding northbound on 29th Street in a designated bike lane when the Mercedes, which was going westbound on Queens Plaza North, hit him, police said.

Lopez was ejected from his bike and he hit the hood and windshield of the car before falling onto the street, according to police. Responding officers and EMS found him lying on the road with severe head trauma. He was taken to Cornell Hospital in critical condition.

The 35-year-old driver and his 39-year-old passenger stayed on the scene; they were not hurt, police said.

Police initially said the driver was handcuffed at the scene on a DWI charge, but announced Friday there has been no arrest in the case pending further toxicology tests. They said their investigation is continuing.
