Would-Be Robber Bails Out of Car on Queens Street, Hits Woman in Head on Hammer, Makes Anti-Gay Remark: NYPD

Police are searching for a hate crime suspect who allegedly drove up to a 28-year-old woman on a Queens street, hit her in the head with a hammer and made an anti-gay remark while trying to steal her purse, police say. 

The man got out of a gray Toyota 4Runner at about 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 and approached the victim on 67th Street near 41st Avenue in Woodside, police say. 

He tried to take the woman's purse and assaulted her, police said. He ran back to his car without taking anything and drove southbound on 66th Street.

The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital with cuts, bleeding and pain to the back of her head, according to police.

The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating.
