Queens Man Charged After Allegedly Hitting Boy, 6, Getting Off Stopped School Bus: DA

A Queens man has been charged with assault, driving without a license and other charges after he allegedly hit a 6-year-old boy stepping off a stopped school bus last month, then fled the scene, prosecutors say.

The 47-year-old Rosedale man drove up behind a yellow school bus that had its stop sign out and lights flashing at the intersection of 227th Street and 199th Avenue in Rosedale on Dec. 3, 2014, according to the Queens district attorney's office.

The driver, identified as Garfield A. Myrie, drove his Toyota Avalon around the school bus and hit the 6-year-old boy as he was getting off the bus and walking toward his mother, according to prosecutors.

Myrie allegedly got out of his car, picked up the boy and held him briefly as he told the boy's mother: "He looks OK, but I can bring him to my doctor."

The boy's mother, Laurie Harris, told Myrie to put her son down, which he did, according to prosecutors. He then allegedly got back into his car and left the scene without reporting the incident.

Myrie's license had been suspended three or more times, according to DMV records.

The boy was taken to a local Queens hospital, where he was treated for a broken femur, prosecutors said.

Myrie was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court Friday, Jan. 16, and is being held on $25,000 bail pending his next court appearance on Feb. 13. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.
