Man Tries to Rape Queens Girl On Way to School: Police

The man tried to assault the girl in the Jamaica area

Police are searching for a man who allegedly tried to rape a 10-year-old girl on her way to school in Queens Monday morning.

The girl had gotten off a bus on 168th Street in Jamaica at about 7:15 a.m. and was walking toward an underpass to take another bus to Fresh Meadows, where she goes to school, investigators said.

A man grabbed the girl and tried to assault her, but a passing car prompted him to run away, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Thursday.

The girl was not hurt.

Commuters waiting for buses yards from where the attempted rape took place were worried and disgusted.

"They need to catch him," said Jennifer Spencer of Jamaica.

A mother who gave her first name as Denise said she thought of her own daughter.

"My daughter's 10," she said. "Thank God it wasn't her."
