A Queens apartment building was evacuated Monday after a man set off a pyrotechnic inside his apartment, killing himself, officials said.

A 70-year-old man living inside the building at 82-72 Austin St. reportedly lit some sort of firework inside his mouth, killing himself, police said.

His girlfriend was in the apartment at the time and was not hurt, officials said.

The building and a nearby restaurant appeared to be evacuated as police, firefighters and bomb technicians responded, though residents were being allowed back in by Monday night.

The explosion was isolated to a single apartment and did not affect other units.

Ida Siegal and Jonathan Dienst contributed to this report.
