Queen Elizabeth to Visit Ground Zero in July

Queen Elizabeth II will visit Ground Zero next month to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said today.

The Queen is due in town July 6 following an eight-day tour of North America; she and her husband, Prince Philip, are expected to lay a wreath at the World Trade Center site.

The 84-year-old monarch will likely meet with first responders from the police and fire departments and family members of the nearly 3,000 people murdered when terrorists hijacked two planes and flew them into the World Trade Center towers almost a decade ago.

The Queen will also address the United Nations General Assembly during her visit to the Big Apple before heading back to London.

Queen Elizabeth won't be the only British royalty to grace the city with her presence this summer. Her grandson, Prince Harry, is scheduled to participate in the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic on Governors' Island two weeks before the Queen's arrival.

Harry's horseback-riding prowess (and signature red hair) at last year's classic drew scores of spectators and we expect the same at the upcoming one on June 27th. Don't miss it.
