‘Pumpkin Patrols' Watch for Halloween Pranks

New York State Thruway police and civilian volunteers are again patrolling the 641-mile highway system

State police on the New York State Thruway and civilian volunteers are again patrolling the 641-mile highway to prevent dangerous Halloween pranks.

Dubbed "Pumpkin Patrols," the extra surveillance along New York Thruway overpasses first began in 1976 to cut down on vandalism on Halloween night.

Thruway Authority officials say the patrols began Thursday and will continue through Friday.

Members of Troop T, the state police detail that patrols the Thruway, are being helped by citizen band radio clubs and amateur radio operators. Volunteers are also assisting troopers by keeping an eye on Thruway overpasses.

Officials say 16 groups in 20 counties have asked to participate in this year's effort.
