Couple Killed in New Jersey House Fire

A married couple was killed when a fire roared through a northern New Jersey home Sunday morning, authorities said.

According to the Summerset County Prosecutor, firefighters responded to the fire at the Meadow Run Drive home in Montgomery Township just after 6 a.m. and found 72-year-old John Sheridan and his wife, 69-year-old Joyce Sheridan, in an upstairs bedroom were the fire was contained.

John Sheridan was pronounced dead at the scene while his wife died later at a nearby hospital

Several neighbors said they heard sirens around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, adding that they never saw flames coming from the home, only smoke. The exterior of the home did not appear damaged.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Investigators were still at the scene late Sunday afternoon, and the area surrounding the home had been cordoned off.

John Sheridan was the president and CEO of Cooper University Health Care, a hospital in Southern New Jersey.

“It is hard to overstate how great a loss John’s death is to his family, friends, co-workers and Cooper,”  said George Norcross, a colleague of Sheridan's. “He was a friend, a mentor and a role model."
