Several Trapped in Elevators After NYC Development Loses Power: Officials

Several people spent the morning trapped in elevators after a planned community in Queens lost power, a manager for the properties said.

Power was knocked out at Rochdale Village, in Jamaica, at about 9:30 a.m., according to assistant manager Alex Friedman. The outage was caused when workers at the village's power plant accidentally tripped some sort of switch.

The village's management said that the FDNY responded to the complex and checked 121 elevators for people who may be trapped. Several people were found and brought to safety, but no injuries were reported.

The village was in the process of restoring power to the 5,000 apartments, dozens of businesses and nine schools affected by the outage late Wednesday morning.
