Power Outage Affects Newark Penn Station, Rutgers-Newark and NJIT

Power went out at Newark Penn Station and in parts of the campuses of Rutgers-Newark and New Jersey Institute of Technology Friday morning after several underground circuits failed, PSE&G officials said.

The circuits failed at around 9:50 a.m. causing outages in the vicinity of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Warren Street. Residential customers and train service were not affected, the utility company said.

"Our backup generators kicked in, so there was no impact on service," John Durso Jr., a NJ Transit spokesman, told NJ.com.

Some classes at both schools have been either relocated or canceled due to the outage, according to newark.rutgers.edu and NJIT.edu.

PSE&G says crews are on the scene making repairs. There was no word yet on when power would be restored.
